Meet the Peveretts of Haberstock Hall

Welcome to the 2022 Series: The Peveretts of Haberstock Hall

This five book series features the intrepid social crusaders of Haberstock. Country gentleman-doctor, Alfred Peverett and his wife, Catherine, have raised five children in the belief that its their obligation to make the world a better place. Now, those five young adults are looking to take their place in that world and bring their ideals to fruition.

Lord Tresham's Tempting Rival (Nov. 2021) features Anne Peverett, the second oldest daughter, who comes to London with her knowledge in herbal medicine in order to empower people to take charge of their own healthcare. she meets her match, however, in traditional physician, Dr. Lord Ferris Tresham, who has concerns about putting that kind of power in the hands of the uneducated. But they discover while they disagree on somethings, they both share a passion for providing healthcare for the poor. When they combine efforts, they discover they can be more together than they are separate-- a discovery that extends from the professional to the personal.  This November release has a strong Christmas theme to it and is considered a holiday read, set in 1850s London over Christmas. It also capitalizes on Dicken's theme of charity giving at the holidays. Does the name, Ferris Tresham ring a bell to you (Christmas bells or otherwise?), it should. The Treshams are a family featured in the 2018 series, Allied at the Altar. . Ferris is the second son of the Duke of Cowden and you see his wedding to Anne in the second chapter of Marriage Deal with the Viscount. Now, you can go back in time and see how he got to the altar.  He is also featured in the fourth book in that series, when his brother, Fortis, returns from the Crimean war.

Saving her Mysterious Soldier (Jan. 2022) features Dorothea Peverett (Thea) the oldest daughter and twin to William. We meet her in 1853 in London with Anne, working at Florence Nightingale's hospital

for gentlewoman. When the government finally permits women to nurse in the Crimea, Thea joins Florence in Scutari, Turkey. She returns home with a recovering soldier in tow, known only by the name of Edward. As she nurses him back to health and back to his memories, they both attempt to discover their place back home after they've been to war. Who are they now? For Thea, this means grappling with the limits of her gender. There is no place to study medicine in England that will accept a woman. What's to become of her skills? Is she to content herself with countryside midwifery or is there a way to change the system? Thea discovers that in order to truly save others, she must first save herself. https://www.harlequin.com/shop/books/9781335407559_saving-her-mysterious-soldier.html

Miss Peverett's Secret Scandal (March 2022) features the youngest Peverett, Thomasia. Hiding a child born out of wedlock after a disastrous Season in London following Anne's wedding, Thomasia returns

to Haberstock Hall, infant in tow. There, she continues her advocacy for woman's healthcare and custody rights by locking horns with the conservative Lord Stanton over the attempted repeal of the 1845 bastardy act. Caught between them is local MP, Shaw Rawdon who must risk his career in order to win Thomasia's heart and her trust.

The Bluestocking's Whirlwind Liaison (August 2022) Rebecca Peverett has always been the quiet sister. While her sisters wed earls, break glass ceilings and challenge parliament, she hides away in her workshop at Haberstock Hall, making inventions that will help others live better lives. This is her contribution for the world. Even if she only helps local folk, it is enough. Still, she harbors hopes of having a patent that will allow her inventions to be bigger than that. When Howell Manufacturing offers to purchase one of her designs, it seems her dreams are about to

come true, as long as they don't mind that she's a woman. When Jules Howell comes for a visit, she has only a day to persuade him her gender doesn't matter. Jules is enchanted not only with Haberstock Hall, but with her as well. Drawn to Haberstock and to Becca, Jules's stultifying life begins to change, if only he is brave enough to risk it all. https://www.harlequin.com/shop/books/9780369729644_the-bluestockings-whirlwind-liaison.html

Doctor Peverett's Christmas Miracle (October 2022) This novella, included in an anthology (Under the Mistletoe) with Marguerite Kaye, caps off the Peverett series with William's homecoming from the Crimea. He is home and ostensibly ready to take his place as the next generation of healer at Haberstock Hall. It's always been the plan that he will follow in his father's footsteps. But his goals have changed since the Crimea and he is no longer sure that is what he wants even though it will disappoint his father. When he reunites in London with Crimean nurse, Honoria McGrath, much is rekindled between them, and he encourages him to pursue his passions--both of them.  This story takes place over the two weeks leading up to, and through Christmas, splitting it's time between London at the holidays and a country Christmas at home at Haberstock Hall, surrounded by the series' characters.

Day 4 of the Viscountdown!: The Bickford Fuse

On p. 185 in Chapter 14, Valerian and Phillippa and her brother, Beldon, have a dinner conversation about a man named Bickford who is patenting a new kind of fuse for blasting in the mines. Valerian and Beldon decide to ride over the next day and talk with him about his invention. The Bickford fuse was a big step forward for mining safety since it took away a significant amount of risk miners faced when lighting the traditional reed fuses. Bickford did exist, he did craft this fuse and did design his own production line for mass producing that fuse in the 1830s.
