But they discover while they disagree on somethings, they both share a passion for providing healthcare for the poor. When they combine efforts, they discover they can be more together than they are separate-- a discovery that extends from the professional to the personal. This November release has a strong Christmas theme to it and is considered a holiday read, set in 1850s London over Christmas. It also capitalizes on Dicken's theme of charity giving at the holidays. Does the name, Ferris Tresham ring a bell to you (Christmas bells or otherwise?), it should. The Treshams are a family featured in the 2018 series, Allied at the Altar. . Ferris is the second son of the Duke of Cowden and you see his wedding to Anne in the second chapter of Marriage Deal with the Viscount. Now, you can go back in time and see how he got to the altar. He is also featured in the fourth book in that series, when his brother, Fortis, returns from the Crimean war.

https://www.harlequin.com/shop/books/9780369711304_lord-treshams-tempting-rival.html

Saving her Mysterious Soldier (Jan. 2022) features Dorothea Peverett (Thea) the oldest daughter and twin to William. He is home and ostensibly ready to take his place as the next generation of healer at Haberstock Hall. It's always been the plan that he will follow in his father's footsteps. But his goals have changed since the Crimea and he is no longer sure that is what he wants even though it will disappoint his father. When he reunites in London with Crimean nurse, Honoria McGrath, much is rekindled between them, and he encourages him to pursue his passions--both of them. This story takes place over the two weeks leading up to, and through Christmas, splitting it's time between London at the holidays and a country Christmas at home at Haberstock Hall, surrounded by the series' characters.

https://bookhype.com/book/show/959edf94-4593-4479-a56d-26ea76099811/under-the-mistletoe
Bronwyn Scotthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00526455876803140703noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8979201743366748736.post-42418075738273794872021-01-01T10:37:00.004-08:002021-01-01T10:37:56.104-08:00Welcome to the 2021 Series:; The Rebellious Sisterhood
Happy New Year!

The Cornish Dukes are behind us and it's time to welcome in the 2021 series, the Rebellious Sisterhood. The series features three female artists looking to make a mark on the world and live life on their own terms. Book 1 features Artemisia Stansfield, a woman seeking promotion to the rank of RA (Royal Academician) at the Royal Academy of the Arts. Set in 1820, right after the death of one of the original Academy founders, Mary Moser, Artemisia struggles to overcome gender barriers despite her talent. The second book, Revealing the True Miss Stansfield, features Adelaide, Artemisia's younger sister (March 1, 2021) and the third book, A Wager to Tempt the Runaway, features an itinerant artist named osefina Ricci who is caught in a bet between Artemisia and Sir Aldred Gray (May or June 2021).

The stories are set in Seasalter on the Kent coast. In this blog post I want to introduce to Seasalter as it was in 1820 when it was not much at all. It's primary industries were oysters and smuggling. It's the perfect place for Artemisia to escape to when she turns her back on Society and rusticates. I want to acknowledge the Blue Anchor Corner as a source I turned to for information about Seasalter in the 1820s. If you are interested in the site, you can access it here: https://seasaltercross.com/

Seasalter contained a few outlying farmhouses like the one Artemisia inherited from her aunt, St. Alphege's church, the Crown inn and a handful of fishing huts. The Crown Inn was later renamed the Blue Anchor, and it wasn't clear to me exactly when the re-naming happened, so I stuck with calling it The Crown for the series. I did embellish the town teeny bit with the invention of a bakery next door to the Crown where Elianora makes her delicious ginger biscuits on Fridays. But in truth, there was no bakery. Seasalter relied on the close proximity of Faversham and the larger village of Whitstable for what might pass as 'shops' in that rural area. There is no High Street in Seasalter.

Geographically, Seasalter is set in a marshy area that provides an estuary for birds. From Seasalter, one can see the Isle of Sheppey and the oyster beds are about a mile from the shore.

It was interesting to learn that Seasalter had relatively temperate winters. They were not tropical by any means, but winters had a mild quality to them (45 degrees and rainy) which made it possible for an intrepid soul to tramp the marsh, beach and shingle year long if they so desired. This is important to Artemisia who spend a lot of her time outdoors sketching the wildlife and there are several scenes where Artemisia and Darius make good use of the isolated outdoors in winter to talk over campfires bundled up in blankets.

Stay tuned for more weekly posts about Seasalter as we celebrate the Jan. 1 release Portrait of a Forbidden Love.

Bronwyn

Bronwyn Scotthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00526455876803140703noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8979201743366748736.post-32785808340448197932020-03-22T10:03:00.002-07:002020-03-22T10:03:27.377-07:00Gool Peran! Or Happy St. Piran's Day. It's not really St. Piran's day as I write this, but a few weeks after. St Piran's Day is March 5th. I thought this week I would give us a behind the scenes look at the first meeting of Penrose and Cassian in "The Passions of Lord Trevethow." Their first meeting takes place at the St. Piran's day fair in Redruth, not far from Hayle, where Cassian's family seat is located, and of course Penrose lives in Redruth.

St. Piran, himself, was a 5th century Cornish abbot, and later a saint. He was Irish, and today he is known as the patron saint of Cornwall and of tin miners (which seems to go hand in hand). In modern Cornwall, a lot of towns have their own St Piran's festivals, like Truro and Golowan, but Redruth is generally acknowledged as the home and founding place of St. Piran's day festivals. The festivals have changed little over the centuries--consisting of street fairs, fair food, vendors and entertainments. Here's a nice link to a brief story about St. Piran https://www.tregenna-castle.co.uk/the-resort/blog/what-is-st-pirans-day/. Just a note, a lot of the easily accessed material on the internet, creates the impression that St. Piran's day was first celebrated in Redruth in 2011-- not so. However, there was a hiatus in celebrations and then a resurgence of them in the late 19th century in Cornwall. So, it is possible that I took a bit of license in bumping up the fair to 1824.
Welcome to the third installment of "behind the scenes" of Lord Trevethow. One of my favorite parts of the book is the London visit of Hawaiian Royalty, which was one of the highlights of that year's Season. This gives Pen a chance to 'see the world' without leaving London, and a chance for Pen and her father to confront their fears of strangers--although in her father's case, those fears become truth which creates an interesting dilemma about moving forward despite known risks.

There were excellent records of the Hawaiian King's itinerary, from the hotel he stayed at, to the daily outings that he took, complete with dates and times, guests, and even the titles of plays and operas that he took in . In some cases, there was even detail down to the hour he would be somewhere. That's always a great find! In the book, Cassian takes Penrose to the Foreign Secretary's reception and the evening is just as historically recorded. The Lifeguard band was the slated entertainment, the guests were high ranking peers, along with any highly ranked foreign ambassador or else-wise who were in the city, and the place the reception is held at is the one that was used. I'll say more about the political aspects of the visit in the part II next week of this post, since the visit was somewhat controversial.
I used a variety of sources to piece together the itinerary of the King and how that would work around Cassian's own social calendar. However, I was most grateful to the work done by J. Susan Corley in her article entitled: The British Press Greets the King of the Sandwich
Islands: Kamehameha II in London, 1824. This was an amazing and detailed resource. I wish I could post the link here so you all could read the exciting depth and descriptions but the link cannot be posted.

I thought the inclusion of the royal visit was an important addition to Cassian and Pen's story since Cassian promises to show Pen the world, knowing full well he can't leave London with her. So, he brings the world to her--the visit to the Greek themed opera house, and a chance to meet the Hawaiian royals. This was a great intersection of history and fiction.Bronwyn Scotthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00526455876803140703noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8979201743366748736.post-58342466314885011712020-03-07T09:10:00.002-08:002020-03-07T09:10:07.975-08:0019th Century Roller CoastersLord Trevethow's passion--one of them at least--is to build a pleasure garden that bring experiences and the world to his small corner of Cornwall. One of the visions he shares with Penrose in the novel, is the vision of a Mountain, or a modern day roller coaster, like the ones he experienced on his travels through Russia and France (if you recall a brief reference from Unwrapping his Festive Temptation--Rosenwyn and Cador's novella, there is a mention of Marianne Treleven begging for tales of his travels and wanting to hear all about Russia). So, I thought I would share a little bit about the origins of the roller coaster here-- what would Cassian have seen and experienced?

In the 16th and 17th centuries, Russians began the idea with ice slides or 'flying mountains' and sleds that crash landed into a pile of sand. https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/russian-roller-coasters This article from Atlasobscura is confirmed in several other articles about the Russian Mountains, if you want to read more about how they were constructed and used.

From Russia, the coaster concept goes to France and the pleasures of the French Court. In France, the coasters are referred to as "Russes des Montagnes" Russian mountains. The most well known is the Russes de Belleville. How Stuff Works, has a nice informative paragraph or two on the topic of roller coasters in France if you'd like to read more: https://science.howstuffworks.com/engineering/structural/roller-coaster1.htm.

Additionally, the French also improve on the steerless sled/cart idea by introducing the tracked cart that followed a groove.--pretty cool! If you're wondering how the French conquered the lack of snow and ice that the Russian Mountains relied upon, they did it with wax--also a pretty cool fun fact.

And of course, Cassian has his own improvements in mind as well.

Happy Reading,
February has passed in a whirlwind of hard work finishing up the 4th book in the Cornish Duke's series. Now, it is time to celebrate with the release of Book #2, The Passions of Lord Trevethow. Cassian's story is complex. He's a man on a mission that is part legacy and part revenge. Still struggling to come to grips with his brother's death by misadventure, Cassian wants to

make amends for his brother's errors by bringing jobs and economic diversity to Cornwall through the opening of a pleasure garden that would educate, entertain, employ and sustain the population. There's only one catch: he needs land to build it on and the man holding the land refuses to let it go to anyone outside the family. Cassian's challenge: to become family by marrying the man's reclusive daughter. But before that can happen, Cassian meets an entrancing young peasant woman at the Redruth St. Piran's Day Fair and falls madly in love. Now he has to decide between his heart and his legacy.

Does that remind you a bit of the scene in Sleeping Beauty where Prince Phillip falls in love at first sight with Briar Rose in the forest, then doesn't want to go home and marry the unseen princess? I hope so. Cassian is a bit of a 19th century Walt Disney with his dream of a pleasure garden that brings experiences to people, so it only seemed fitting to give him a story like one of the great Disney animated classics. Cassian doesn't have spinning wheels or any pricked fingers, or even a Maleficent style Cornish pixie, but he does the Briar Rose/Princess Aurora dilemma, just as Penrose will have her own Prince Phillip/boy I met in the woods dilemma.

Stay tuned for more insights into Cassian's story throughout the month!
But, before I do, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at the inspirations for the four heroes. It's hard to believe this time last year, the series was just beginning to take shape and now it's out there for readers! So here's how it began.

Eaton Falmage, Lord Lynford (heir to the Duke of Bude).
He's meant to be a regional fellow, more concerned with what he can do at home for his people than the glitter of London, and with his own secret to hide, he'd prefer to stay out of Society's eye. While he didn't physically embody Aidan Turner, he did embody some of the similar attributes of Turner's character, Ross Poldark. So, I started there for some inspiration about Eaton. Fun fact: about three months after I finished the mansucript, revisions and all, I was watching Season Four of Poldark, the episode where Demelza cuts the ribbon for the new school. If you're a Poldark fan, you'll remember that Season 4 and 5 focused on education for the children. I saw that and at first I was like, "Aw, that was my idea to have schools!" (even though, we know historically, there was indeed a big push in the 1820s for schools at mines and at factories by those more civically minded. But then, I was like, 'oh that's so cool to see that story line get reinforced.'

Cassian Truscott, Viscount Trevethow (heir to the Duke of Hayle).
Although Eaton is also an outdoorsman, Cassian is a rugged outdoorsman. He loves beaches and woods and riding and sailing and traveling. So, I definitely wanted someone who had that outdoorsy feel to them and that confidence. Here's my dirty little secret-- Gaston in the live action Beauty and the Beast is sexy!! What makes him unattractive to me are his personality traits and his belief system. But what if, he was good looking and good-thinking? Then, we'd really have something, in fact, we'd have Cassian Truscott.

Inigo Vellanoweth, Earl of Tintagel and the heir to the Duke of Boscastle
Inigo was a little trickier. Being raised in this group of young men and in Cornwall, he too loves the outdoors, but he also is very good with investments and he's the financial engineer of the group, partnering with Cassian in the Porth Karrek Land Development Company. And it's Inigo that Eaton calls in to mastermind the plan to save Eliza's mines. So, for Inigo, I wanted a slightly more refined image that captured both his intellect and Town Bronze as well as his outdoorsmanship. I settled on Torrance Coombs from Reign-- he plays the king's bastard, Bash, whose character embodied a similar combination-- a man who had to navigate the nuances of French Court and all its politics, while also enjoying a robust outdoorsy life. I love how this cover came out--you'll notice that Inigo's cravat is actually tied whereas Eaton doesn't have one at all and Cassian's is rather untied and loose. The tied cravat is a nod to Inigo's polish. Readers will note that Inigo spends considerably more time in London than Eaton and Cassian.

Vennor Penlerick, The Duke of Newlyn. His cover isn't done yet, but he's meant to be the more classically handsome of the group. He's spent the entire series in Town, grieving the loss of his father, whose death opens the series, and trying to figure out who he is. So, I will leave this space blank for a little while and leave him to your imagination. He's blonde, though, the only blond of the bunch as readers of Lord Lynford will have noticed. Until then...get those imaginations warmed up. HINT: his physical inspiration is Dan Stevens in his Downton Abbey mode.Bronwyn Scotthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00526455876803140703noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8979201743366748736.post-25949686543824236852020-01-10T11:55:00.001-08:002020-01-20T10:34:34.502-08:00The Cornish Dukes TimelineIf you're interested in the progression of the series, here's a little time line with memorable events to guide your reading.
It's going to be a great year with the Cornish Dukes. Introductions are in order so let me give you an overview to the driving concept behind the series. The Cornish Dukes are a circle of 8 men-- The Duke of Bude and his son, Eaton Falmage (The Secrets of Lord Lynford), The Duke of Hayle and his son and heir Cassian Truscott (The Passions of Lord Trevethow), The Duke of Boscastle and his son and heir, Inigo Vellanoweth, and the Duke of Newlyn, Vennor Penlerick.

This is a circle of fathers all hailing from Cornwall, all committed to social justice and reform and all committed to family, particularly the idea that a man should raise his sons. As a product of that mission, the four heroes in the series (Eaton, Cassian, Inigo and Vennor) have been brought up with a strong value of family and a strong commitment to their communities. They are not ducal heirs who believe it's their prerogative to while away their time wenching and wining in London! A strong theme of social commitment underlies each of the stories-- Eaton, for example with his commitment to education, and Cassian with his desire to build a Cornish amusement garden to rival Vauxhall.
Each of the 4) heirs are influenced by their mentor, Richard Penlerick, the Duke of Newlyn (Vennor's father) and his death (which opens the series in chapter 1 of The Secrets of Lord Lynford) causes each of them to question their pathways and choices in order to make their lives count in ways that would honor their mentor and their family names.

Of course, as each of them discover, legacies can be all-consuming and that ultimately life is a balancing act. All work and no play, can make ducal heirs dull boys, thank goodness there are four exquisite heroines to help these fine men strike that balance.
Actually, if you've read the Christmas release, you've already met them! They were at luncheon with Rosenwyn Treleven and her parents that first Sunday in Advent. Eaton Falmage, Lord Lynford, is the one who encourages Rosenwyn and Cador Kitto to play for them after they ate, and Eaton is the one who gives Cador the music school (spoiler alert for those who haven't dug into Cornish Christmas yet!).

Eaton has a secret, as you might guess from the title. While that secret has certainly shaped his life and his choices, he has not let it shape his morals, his ethics, and his sense of justice, or enjoyment of life, which I think makes him doubly heroic. His heroine, widow, Eliza Blaxland is his equal in all ways; in tenacity, in perseverance, and her sense of social justice and most importantly in her stubbornness, which creates quite the obstacle for them both to overcome. Both of them are very willing to dedicate their lives to helping others but far less willing to accept help when it's offered to them. I hope you enjoy Eaton and Eliza's story and that it inspires some new year's resolutions for you, too!
It's release day for Invitation to a Cornish Christmas. In anticipation of that, I wanted folks to have a chance to meet my charming heroine, Rosenwyn Treleven. You will recognize the physical inspiration below for Rosenwyn as the lovely Demelza from Poldark. Rosenwyn is the oldest of Sir Jock Treleven's six red-haired daughters. She's been to London for two Seasons and had some acclaim as an accomplished pianist until a scandal of the heart sent her back to Cornwall for good.
That's fine with her. Unlike Cador Kitto, she loves her part of the world. Where he has darker memories of his childhood, she has glorious childhood remembrances of Porth Karrek. But this is not all the two clash over. Her brush with the world has left her cynical of flirtatious, good looking men and she worries what such a man might intend during his time in Porth Karrek. The last thing she wants is Cador Kitto near her or her sisters. But the more she tries to warn him off, the more she is drawn to him and the life he's lived beyond Porth Karrek.

In writing the story, I loved how strong of a heroine Rosenwyn was without being bitter or nasty while not hesitating to speak her mind. When she is out of line, she recognizes it and seeks to make amends. It takes strong person to do that. She is also courageous enough to love a second time even after a disastrous first and it was fun to write that evolution as well as exciting and sometimes challenging to making a compelling case for a Regency era heroine to take her own desires into her own hands regarding the choices she makes in her relationship with Cador.Bronwyn Scotthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00526455876803140703noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8979201743366748736.post-23790470981123779472019-09-25T05:52:00.001-07:002019-09-25T05:53:37.037-07:00Meet Cador Kitto, Porth Karrek's local boy made good<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In "Unwrapping his Festive Temptation," my part of the Cornish Christmas anthology, readers meet Cador Kitto, a composer hired by Treeve Penhaligon (Marguerite's hero) to compose a Christmas cantata for Nadelik. Cador is a local boy made good. Twenty years ago, he left Porth Karrek to study music, courtesy of Porth Karrek reverend who saw his potential, and he's never looked back for several reasons. In fact, Cador never intended to return to Porth Karrek, but circumstances have conspired against him and now he needs to confront his past in order to embrace his future.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For this hero, I wanted to do something a little different from usual Bronwyn Scott heroes. Cador is not overly tall. He's 5'9, slender in build, and has flowing, golden poet-hair as I like to call it. Toby Regbo's portrayal of Francis in Reign provides some inspiration for this particular look, a nice blend of a strong character with a poet's looks.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This blend made sense to me. Cador Kitto was a miner's child, who lived in squalid conditions growing up and worked a few early years doing mining work that was often assigned to children of miners to make a few extra pennies for the family. He would not have had the nutrition or the lifestyle habits to have grown tall or muscularly bulky even if it had been in the genes. If anyone is interested in the correlation between height and occupations, here's the citation for an article that chronicles the concept:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cador is pronounced with the short A sound, but over the years, he's been away, he goes by Cade with an long A, just one of the ways he'd tried to distance himself from his Cornish roots and his past. And it is just one of the parallels to a modern celebrity lifestyle in the 21st century. Cador has some fame. He is a well-known composer, who is currently down on his luck, a prodigy whose hit a rough spot in his late twenties, not unlike, perhaps, a child actor. So, while he's a celebrity with some laurels to rest on for a bit, he is not am a title. He has not been born to his position, he has earned it and he can lose it, which is a great fear for him, that he might somehow be reduced to what he once was. This too was an interesting and different storyline to pursue instead of the usual nobleman hero.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I hope you enjoy Cador's story. His journey is very much a Christmas journey, a nontraditional hero set against the backdrop of a very traditional season.

October 1 our Christmas anthology, "Invitation to a Cornish Christmas" will be available in North America via Amazon, Barnes and Noble and always through the Harlequin site. I am so excited about these stories. This anthology is our 4th collaboration together and I think it's the best so far. I am pleased also to share that "Unwrapping his Festive Temptation," my story in the anthology, is my 50th Harlequin release, so this book is a double win for me!
It has headlands upon which is one of the big manors owned by Marguerite's hero's family, the Penhaligons. The village is well-known for its beach, Karrek Sands and the quiet cove that lies at the bottom of the headlands. We gave it a main street--Budoc lane with St. Piran's church at one end and the beach at the other. Along the way, the lane is populated by a butcher's, a baker's, and yes, a candle maker's, along with Chegwin's Mercantile and the Ship Inn. It was great fun creating the town and the people who lived there. The town itself became just as much of a character in the stories as did our heroes and heroines! I hope you enjoy discovering Porth Karrek for yourself. Stay tuned here and at Marguerite's blog for all the inside details on the making of this Christmas 'miniseries.'Bronwyn Scotthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00526455876803140703noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8979201743366748736.post-29312370381927571242019-08-21T07:10:00.004-07:002019-08-21T07:10:54.063-07:00Allied at the Altar series is complete

August comes to a close, so does this year's Bronwyn Scott series. Allied at the Altar is complete with the release of Captivated by her Convenient Husband, book #4 in the series. This is a chance to close all the loops and learn what happened when Cam Lithgow walked into the tent in the Crimea in the epilogue to One Night with the Major. The Reading Debutante declares, "Scott is a master of the genre." Read their reviews and more

<span class="readable" id="reviewTextContainer2616247232" style="font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; line-height: 21px;">This is a fabulous start to a whole new series; Allied At The Alter, which going by this first book is going to be another brilliant series by a favourite author of mine. This is essentially a ‘Marriage of Convenience’ story, but as ever with Ms Scott’s work there is always a great secondary plot or a twist to the tale. I love that Bronwyn Scott has set this series in the Victorian era, which is such a change from her hugely popular and brilliant regencies, I can say without a doubt that she has pulled a beauty out of the bag with this one.

Conall; Viscount Taunton after gaining the title he now has to deal with the problems that go along with it, which in Taunton’s case means they are in dire need of money. Conall comes up with the most brilliant plan to gain the funds that his family and more importantly the title needs and that is to do what many aristocrats deem as rather vulgar. He plans to go into business!! I know shock and horror, he wants to start trading with the mills with his Alpacca wool, but to do that he needs capital but when he goes to the one man who could set this venture off refuses him point blank he must find another avenue to go down.

I love that about him he is an enterprising, creative and imaginative young man who has a proper head on his shoulders, in fact he rather makes me think of John Thornton from North and South – I think everyone knows how much I love a man who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty and this is the man. Conall is a very proud man, it does grate that he has to beg but where his family is concerned he will do what is needed. I really, really love him he just wants to do what’s right he is motivated, enigmatic and at times very serious but that just adds to his appeal. Once he gets turned down by a family friend no less he has no other choice than to fall on to the charity of the mysterious but incredibly wealthy; La Marchessa di Cremona.

Sofia has her own reasons to be as mysterious and hidden in the shadows as she is, if found she would face a fate far, far worse then death, which is why she is equally as desperate for this deal with Conall to go well. She is a complex woman, and I love how Ms Scott doesn’t divulge all of Sofia’s secrets in one go, she teases with dropping little clues and subtle hints through out the story. Yes, it is pretty easy to figure out her back story and why she is fleeing, but it’s incredibly satisfying finding out about this woman. Sofia may appear to be an alluring, beautiful, majestic creature from another planet and yes she is, but that is a mask to protect herself, she is pretty damaged, she is vulnerable, afraid and has trust issues.

I adore both Conall and Sofia, as individuals they are tough cookies who are fighting to not just keep their heads above water but to save their family and themselves. But for me they really shine when they are together, they are both immensely intelligent, resourceful, charismatic and proud. You would think that they would be like chalk and cheese, but that’s as far from the truth as you can get they are each others rock.

This isn’t your stereotypical boy meets girl romance, there is intricate layers that entwine some very serious subjects within the story; such as abuse, divorce and a county which is forging a head into a new innovative world. I love Victorian novels, it was a time of change of new ideas and all of that is features in this book. The character’s are engaging and likeable, the two leads off course are perfect but I love the secondary characters too which are fascinating, and fun to get to know, even the baddie is mesmerising.

Overall this is a brilliantly written, original, thrilling, engaging, captivating and page-turning romance that will keep you teetering at the edge of your seat, reading with baited breath as the story unfolds. A great start to a whole new series, one that I cannot wait to dive into again with book two.

A great book and highly recommended!

This was an Arc copy via the author in exchange for an honest review, thank you Bronwyn.

The 19th century in general sees some early periods of an uptick for divorce legislation throughout Europe. By 1806 the Codice Civile made divorce available to the European peninsula. By the 1830s, when Italy had dissolved back into independent principalities, Piedmont King, Carlos, allowed divorce among non-Catholics. Roderick Phillips writes in his book, "Untying the Knot; a Short History of Divorce," that the Piedmont's positioning in a national movement for Italian of unification might have created a scenario where this divorce law was more widely adopted, but those hopes were quelled when his son, Victor Emmanuel II took the throne in 1852. Victor Emmanuel II abolishes divorce.
These dates are important to Sofia's story line. When the book opens, it's 1854. She's been divorced and living in London for three years, her divorce having taken place in 1851 before the official abolishment. Her husband's desire to have her back in wedlock plays off the conservative nature of Victor Emmanuel. Il Marchese, her husband, cannot receive recognition and advancement in the new, conservative court as a divorced man and since re-marriage after divorce was also an issue, it was not enough for him to simply offer to marry again. He must re-marry his legitimate wife in the eyes of the church. Hence, our villain's desire to have Sofia back specifically.
Alpaca in Britain! It's a thing, really it is. The previous post focused on the heroine's situation, this post will focus on the hero and the backdrop for his story. Viscount Taunton, Conall Everard, is a man down on his luck. His father has died. He has inherited and discovered years worth of debt his father had kept from the family. Conall has to redeem the family coffers in order to afford his sister, Cecilia's Season next year, and his younger brother, Freddie's, education and of course, the estate itself. All eyes are looking to him for leadership.

He is a product of a more modern upbringing than say, a Regency hero. Having come of age in the 1840s, and into his inheritance in the 1850s, he sees the times changing and with them the lifestyle of the peerage. He recognizes that a closed system will atrophy without any newness brought into it. It is no longer enough to live off rents of tenant farmers. He needs something more proactive, less dependent on the weather and the land. Our hero looks around Taunton and sees the rich history of the area in wool production, an industry that has sustained it for centuries. He thinks about his Grand Tour, which was not to the traditional European continent but to the Americas. He remembers the Alpaca and their wool. What if he were to bring alpaca wool to Taunton? An innovative idea is born!

Far-fetched? Not really. In 1853 Sir Titus Salt did just that.
He brings alpaca to Britain and launches a whole new line of wool. You can read a little of his industrial biography here. http://www.erih.net/how-it-started/stories-about-people biographies/biography/show/Biografies/salt/ He also established a mill town, Saltire, not unlike the town of our heroine's ambitions. Which just goes to prove that sometimes fact is stranger than fiction.

Enjoy,
Taunton is noted for its wool industry, as mentioned in the previous post, so today, I thought it would be interesting to share a little of that history.

The River Tone runs through Taunton and lent its water source to the wool industry over the centuries. Today, the River Tone is also known for its fishing.

The town is chartered in 904 AD

By the 13th century there is a fulling mill there for wool

By the 15th century, wool is being exported to France

By the late 16th century, wool is being exported to Africa

In Conall's time, Taunton proved progressive in other ways too, adding gaslights, laying out gardens, and greenspaces, building an enormous amount of churches and a hospital, making it a great backdrop for Sofia's more progressive dreams of social equality. It was also a large enough town/city to have a register where Sofia and Conall could conduct a civil marriage.

The coming of the railroad made Taunton an approximately four and a half hour rail journey from London. The time of departure from the London station, featured in one of the early chapters of the book, is correct as is the station. This turns what would have been a multiple-day journey by coach or carriage in to a half-day venture. The railroad also increased Taunton's trade links to the world. Taunton wool and other products could easily be transported by railway to the port in Bristol.
